A safer neighborhood does not begin years from now. It begins with practical improvements that can be made today.
Operation Nightlight helps businesses and property owners install strategically positioned exterior lighting along storefronts, sidewalks, entrances, alleys, gathering areas, and other poorly illuminated locations.
Our goal is to create a connected network of light throughout Capitol Hill that supports safer movement, stronger businesses, increased community confidence, and a more welcoming nighttime environment.

A Practical Response to a Visible Problem
Capitol Hill is one of Seattle’s most active cultural and nightlife districts. Every week, thousands of residents, workers, artists, performers, visitors, and patrons travel through the neighborhood after dark.
However, portions of the district remain poorly illuminated. Dark storefronts, recessed entrances, side streets, alleys, parking areas, and inconsistent lighting can make people feel vulnerable and make it more difficult to see potential hazards.
Installing new municipal streetlights can require extensive planning, engineering, construction, utility coordination, and public funding. Operation Nightlight offers a complementary solution that can be implemented more quickly.
By helping individual businesses install effective exterior lighting on their own properties, we can build a district-wide lighting network one location at a time.
What We Do
From Individual Lights to a District-Wide Safety Network
Identify
We work with businesses, property owners, residents, nightlife workers, and public-safety partners to identify dark or poorly illuminated locations.
Assess
Each participating property is evaluated for lighting needs, mounting options, solar exposure, pedestrian activity, glare, and surrounding residences.
Fund
Operation Nightlight helps connect participating locations with grants, sponsors, charitable contributions, matching funds, and other financial resources.
Install
Qualified professionals install appropriately selected solar, hybrid, or energy-efficient exterior lighting.
Maintain
Participating properties agree to keep installed lighting operational and report maintenance needs.
Measure
We document installations, gather community feedback, and evaluate how improved lighting affects visibility and public confidence.
