Business Participation

Help Light Your Business and the Neighborhood Around It

Operation Nightlight invites Capitol Hill businesses and property owners to participate in a coordinated neighborhood lighting initiative.

Your business does not need to be a bar, restaurant, or nightlife venue. Any property that affects the nighttime pedestrian environment may be able to participate.

This includes businesses that close before the nightlife district reaches its busiest hours.

Who can participate?

Potential participants include:

  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Restaurants
  • Cafés
  • Retail businesses
  • Music venues
  • Performance spaces
  • Hotels
  • Apartment buildings
  • Mixed-use properties
  • Parking operators
  • Offices
  • Grocery and convenience stores
  • Salons and personal-service businesses
  • Cultural organizations
  • Property-management companies

What participation may include

Depending on funding and site eligibility, participating businesses may receive:

  • A preliminary nighttime lighting review
  • Fixture and placement recommendations
  • Help identifying available grants or reimbursement programs
  • Access to coordinated installation estimates
  • Sponsor-supported equipment
  • Discounted purchasing opportunities
  • Public recognition as a participating location
  • Inclusion on the Operation Nightlight project map

Business responsibilities

Participating businesses or property owners may be asked to:

  • Provide written property-owner authorization
  • Allow access for assessment and installation
  • Cooperate with permitting requirements
  • Contribute toward costs when applicable
  • Keep the lighting operational
  • Report damaged or failed equipment
  • Avoid repositioning fixtures without review
  • Allow installation documentation
  • Participate in follow-up surveys

Why participate?

Improved exterior lighting may:

  • Make entrances easier to identify
  • Improve visibility for customers and employees
  • Reduce dark areas around a building
  • Support security-camera visibility
  • Improve the appearance of a storefront
  • Demonstrate investment in the neighborhood
  • Help create a more connected pedestrian environment

Operation Nightlight cannot guarantee that lighting will prevent crime or eliminate every safety concern. Lighting is one component of a broader community-safety strategy.
