Our Mission
Operation Nightlight exists to improve nighttime visibility and support community safety throughout Seattle’s Capitol Hill nightlife district.
We bring together businesses, property owners, residents, sponsors, nonprofit organizations, and public-safety partners to create a coordinated network of exterior lighting across the neighborhood.
Mission statement
Our mission is to help illuminate dark and poorly visible areas throughout Capitol Hill by supporting the assessment, funding, installation, and maintenance of effective exterior lighting at participating businesses and properties.
Vision statement
We envision a Capitol Hill where residents, workers, patrons, performers, and visitors can travel through the neighborhood after dark with greater visibility, confidence, and connection.
The challenge
Capitol Hill is active long after many storefronts close. Some buildings provide strong exterior lighting, while others leave portions of the sidewalk, doorway, alley, or adjacent public area in darkness.
This creates an inconsistent nighttime environment. A single bright storefront may be surrounded by dark gaps that reduce visibility and make pedestrians feel less secure.
Traditional streetlight projects remain important, but they may require significant planning, engineering, electrical work, permitting, and public investment.
Operation Nightlight does not seek to replace municipal street lighting. It provides a complementary, business-led strategy that may be implemented more quickly at individual locations.
Our approach
We focus on practical improvements that can be delivered through local participation:
- Building-mounted exterior lights
- Solar-powered lighting where site conditions support it
- Hybrid or hardwired systems where greater reliability is required
- Lighting for entrances, sidewalks, alleys, and gathering areas
- Professional fixture placement and aiming
- Glare and light-trespass prevention
- Coordinated funding and installation
- Long-term maintenance planning
Our principles
Community-centered
The people who live, work, and spend time in Capitol Hill should help identify priorities and evaluate results.
Practical
We focus on improvements that can be installed, maintained, measured, and expanded.
Inclusive
The project is intended to support the safety and comfort of the entire community, including residents, workers, visitors, nightlife patrons, and marginalized communities.
Responsible
Lighting must improve visibility without creating unnecessary glare, residential intrusion, energy waste, or environmental harm.
Collaborative
No single business, agency, or organization can illuminate the district alone. Operation Nightlight is built around coordinated action.
Transparent
We will report how charitable funds are used, where installations are completed, and what the program learns.
