About

About Operation Nightlight

Organization story

Operation Nightlight began with a straightforward observation: many of the people traveling through Capitol Hill after dark move between isolated pockets of light.

One storefront may be well illuminated while the next entrance, alley, parking area, or section of sidewalk remains difficult to see.

Large public-infrastructure projects are important, but the community also needs solutions that can be organized and deployed more quickly.

Operation Nightlight was created to help businesses and property owners become part of a coordinated lighting network. By combining individual installations with nonprofit fundraising, private sponsorship, public partnerships, and community input, the program can create visible neighborhood improvements one property at a time.

What makes the program different?

Operation Nightlight is:

  • Focused on the Capitol Hill nighttime environment
  • Built around business and property participation
  • Designed for phased implementation
  • Open to public and private funding
  • Committed to solar and energy-efficient solutions where practical
  • Focused on responsible fixture selection and placement
  • Intended to complement public streetlighting
  • Structured for measurement and expansion

Operation Nightlight is organized as a Washington nonprofit corporation and is being developed for charitable and community-benefit purposes. The organization intends to operate as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
