Frequently Asked Questions
What is Operation Nightlight?
Operation Nightlight is a community-led nonprofit initiative working to improve nighttime visibility throughout Seattle’s Capitol Hill nightlife district by helping businesses and property owners install effective exterior lighting.
Is Operation Nightlight replacing City streetlights?
No. Operation Nightlight is intended to complement, not replace, public street lighting and other municipal safety improvements.
The program focuses primarily on lighting installed on participating private properties.
Why focus on businesses?
Businesses and property owners control many of the storefronts, walls, entrances, and structures bordering public pedestrian routes.
Coordinated participation can help reduce dark gaps between individually illuminated locations.
Will every light be solar powered?
Solar power is preferred where it can perform reliably. However, not every site receives sufficient sunlight or has enough space for the necessary solar panel and battery.
Some locations may require a hybrid or hardwired energy-efficient LED system.
Will the lighting be extremely bright?
The goal is effective illumination, not uncontrolled brightness.
Fixtures should be selected and aimed to improve visibility while minimizing glare, light intrusion, and unnecessary impact on neighboring residences.
Can lighting guarantee that crime will decrease?
No. Lighting cannot guarantee that crime, harassment, accidents, or other safety issues will be prevented.
Improved visibility is one part of a broader community-safety strategy.
Who pays for the lighting?
Funding may come from charitable donations, sponsors, grants, participating businesses, property owners, manufacturers, contractors, foundations, or a combination of sources.
Can my business apply?
Businesses and property owners within the program area may submit a request for consideration.
Submitting a request does not guarantee funding or installation.
Does the property owner have to approve?
Yes. No permanent fixture will be attached to a property without appropriate owner authorization.
Who installs the equipment?
Approved installations should be completed by qualified professionals appropriate to the type of work being performed.
Who maintains the lighting?
Maintenance responsibilities will be established in the participation agreement for each location.
The business or property owner may be responsible for routine monitoring, while Operation Nightlight may assist with eligible repairs or replacement through a maintenance fund.
Can residents recommend a dark location?
Yes. Residents, workers, visitors, and community organizations may submit suggested locations for review.
How will locations be selected?
Selection may consider:
- Nighttime visibility
- Pedestrian activity
- Business and owner participation
- Technical feasibility
- Solar exposure
- Available funding
- Community feedback
- Geographic concentration
- Installation cost
- Potential public benefit
Can I sponsor a particular business?
Designated sponsorships may be considered, but all donations remain subject to the organization’s charitable purpose, project standards, and final approval.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Use the answer that matches the organization’s current IRS status.
How can I get involved?
You can donate, become a monthly supporter, recommend a location, apply as a participating business, volunteer, provide professional services, or become a program sponsor.
